February 28, 2015 - Attention Debit & ATM Cardholders - We are upgrading your debit card to MasterCard

You will be receiving a MasterCard debit chip card later in 2015. The chip card will replace your existing Visa debit/ATM card. Your current Visa debit/ATM card will no longer be valid once you receive the MasterCard debit chip card. Please verify the Credit Union has your current mailing address and phone number on file.
Your debit chip card will have a different 16 digit number than your current card. If you have used your debit card to set-up debits from your checking account, you will need to contact each company and provide them with the new 16 digit number on your debit chip card. This is not to be confused with debits from your checking account that was set-up using your checking acct. number that begins with 1006.

Note: MasterCard debit chip cards cannot be used for car rentals. For more information on obtaining a credit card call 716.847.6960.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What is a chip card?
Chip cards are regular plastic credit or debit cards with a traditional magnetic strip and an embedded microchip for added security. The embedded microchip generates a unique, one-time code that is needed for each transaction to be approved. It is virtually impossible for fraudsters to replicate this feature in counterfeit cards providing greater security and peace of mind when used in stores. A chip card also has a magnetic stripe on the back of the card so that you may swipe your chip card if the terminal doesn't have chip technology.

Are chip cards safer to use than magnetic stripe cards?
All debit cards are safe, and offer protection from unauthorized use of your card or account information. The chip technology offers another layer of security when used at a chip-reading terminal.

Can I use my chip card for all the same things as my old card?
Yes, you can still make purchases as you always have — by entering the card number online or swiping your card at merchant locations that do not yet have chip readers. You can also continue to use your card at ATMs.

How do I use my chip card?
Merchants that have chip readers: With the front of the card facing up, insert your card into the ATM or in-store terminal. Do not remove card until the transaction is complete. If you remove it too soon, your transaction will be canceled. You will sign the sales receipt to complete your purchase or enter your PIN if at an ATM. When the transaction is complete, remove your card.

Merchants that do not have chip readers: Swipe your card as you would with a traditional magnetic strip card. Sign the sales receipt or enter your PIN if at an ATM

When will chip cards be accepted in the U.S.?
Merchants have already begun to deploy chip terminals, so you will see more and more merchants accepting chip cards over the next few years. Magnetic stripe cards will continue to be accepted.

Will a chip card be more expensive for me to use?
Buffalo Metropolitan is upgrading your card at no cost to you. The replacement card, should your card be lost or stolen, is $10.00. Note traditional magnetic strip ATM and debit cards will no longer be available at the Credit Union.

I have a Credit Union credit card. Will I receive a chip credit card?
Credit card holders will be issued a chip card. Buffalo Metropolitan Federal Credit Union is currently working on this upgrade. Your credit card will be upgraded at no cost to you. More details will be available this summer.
